September Journal Prompts for a New Rhythm

September has the feel of a new year without the noise of one. The light changes, the calendar fills, and something in most of us wants to begin again.

Psalm 145:15 sits well over a month like this one. The eyes of all wait for you. You give them their food in due season. In due season is the phrase that takes the pressure off. September does not have to be the month everything changes, only the month you start watching again. Here are thirty prompts, one for each day of the month. They move from looking back at summer, through what you want this autumn to hold, to the rhythms worth keeping past October.

Days 1 to 7: Closing Out Summer

1. What was the best part of this summer?

2. What did I hope for in June that did not happen?

3. What did I set down that I miss?

4. What did I set down that I do not miss at all?

5. Where did I see God in the last three months?

6. What am I carrying into September that belongs to summer?

7. What would I like to leave behind on the last page of this week?

Days 8 to 14: Looking At Now

8. What does an ordinary weekday actually look like right now?

9. Where is there a gap in it that I have not noticed?

10. What time of day am I most myself?

11. What is taking more from me than it gives?

12. What do I say yes to out of habit?

13. Who do I want more time with this autumn?

14. What would make this month feel well spent?

Days 15 to 21: One Rhythm

15. What one practice would I most like to hold by December?

16. When in the day could it actually happen?

17. What would I have to give up to make room?

18. What has stopped me the last three times I tried?

19. What would the smallest possible version look like?

20. What will I do on the days it does not happen?

21. What is my honest first step, tomorrow?

Days 22 to 30: Autumn Itself

22. What do I love about this season?

23. What is one thing I want to do before the leaves go?

24. Who could I invite in?

25. What am I grateful for today that I would have overlooked in July?

26. What is God teaching me in this stretch?

27. What have I been praying for since spring?

28. What has quietly changed since then?

29. What do I want November to find me doing?

30. What is worth carrying into the last quarter of the year?

How to Use Them

One a day, three lines each, is plenty. This is not a project.

If you miss a week, pick up on today's number rather than catching up. The date matters less than the returning.
