How to Start Your Day With God Before Your Phone

The problem is not that you love your phone more than God. The problem is that at six in the morning your phone is closer to your hand than your Bible is.

Whatever you touch first sets the tone for everything after it. So the fix is not more willpower. It is moving three objects the night before. Psalm 90:14 asks God to satisfy us in the morning with your loving kindness, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. The morning is named on purpose. What fills you first sets the terms for the rest of it.

Move the Charger Tonight

Put the phone on a charger in another room, or at least across the bedroom on a dresser. Far enough that turning off the alarm requires standing up.

This one change does more than any resolution. You cannot scroll something you have to walk to, and by the time you have walked there you are awake enough to choose.

The distance is doing the work here, not your resolve at six in the morning. Resolve is thin at that hour. Distance is not.

Put Something Else Within Reach

Where the phone used to sit, put your Bible. Leave it open to what you are reading next, with a pen on top of it.

An open book asks less of you than a closed one. You are not deciding what to read at six in the morning, you are only continuing.

Give the First Ten Minutes a Shape

Decide now what those minutes hold so you are not negotiating later. Ten minutes covers a short passage, a few minutes of sitting with it, and a prayer that names the day ahead.

Colossians 3:16 talks about letting the word of Christ dwell in you richly, and dwelling is what the first ten minutes are for. Not study. Just letting it stay in the room with you.

If ten feels like nothing, remember that it is ten minutes more than yesterday had. Nobody arrives at an hour without passing through ten first.

Expect the Pull

You will want to check one thing. There is always one thing. A text that might have come in, a weather forecast, a number you want to see.

Notice that pull without arguing with it. It usually passes in under a minute, and it passes faster if your hands are already holding something else.

When It Falls Apart

Some mornings you will wake to the phone in your hand before you remember deciding to pick it up. That is a habit doing what habits do.

Put it down and start where you are. Ten minutes at seven fifteen is still ten minutes, and a morning that begins badly is not a morning that has to end badly.

Guilt is the thing that ends these habits, not failure. Failure is a Tuesday. Guilt is what convinces you not to try again on Wednesday, and it always overstates its case.

Tonight, Not Monday

This does not need a new week or a new season to begin. It needs one small act of setup, done tonight, in the ten seconds before you get into bed.

Walk the charger to the kitchen and put the Bible where it used to be. Tomorrow morning will take care of itself.

You can also make it easier than this. Put a sticky note on the coffee maker with the passage written on it, so the first words you read are already chosen.
