How Long Should Quiet Time Be | An Honest Answer

Most answers to this question are not answers. They say quality over quantity, which is true and completely unhelpful when you are standing in the kitchen deciding whether to sit down.

So here is a number. Ten minutes. Psalm 91:1 says that he who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. Dwelling is not a measurement. It describes somewhere you keep returning to, which is why the number matters less than whether you come back tomorrow.

Ten Minutes Is a Real Quiet Time

Ten minutes is long enough to read something, think about it, and pray. That is the whole structure. Everything longer is the same three things with more room.

It is also short enough that you will actually do it tomorrow, which matters more than any single morning.

The reason nobody says a number is that the number sounds too small to be spiritual. But a small practice repeated is what an actual life with God looks like from the inside.

Ten minutes is also honest about the house you live in. Most of us are not monks, and the plan has to survive a kitchen at seven in the morning.

What Fits Inside Ten Minutes

Three minutes reading a short passage, ten to fifteen verses at most. Three minutes sitting with it, asking what it says about God and what it asks of you. Four minutes praying, starting with thanks and ending with the day ahead.

Set a timer the first week if the shape feels unfamiliar. After that you will feel the ten minutes without checking.

When You Have Twenty

Twenty to twenty five minutes is where most people settle after a year of practice. The reading gets slower, the thinking gets longer, and there is room to write.

Do not aim here at the start. Twenty minutes attempted on day one usually becomes zero minutes by day nine.

Do not fill the whole ten with reading. Reading is the easy part and it will eat the other seven minutes if you let it. Protect the thinking and the praying, because that is where the passage moves from the page into the week.

When You Have Five

Five is a real quiet time too. Read one psalm and pray one sentence. That is the whole thing and it counts.

The five minute version exists so that busy weeks do not become empty months. Keep it in your pocket for the mornings that get away from you.

The Number That Matters More Than Minutes

Frequency beats length every time. Ten minutes on six mornings does more for you than an hour on one Saturday, because you are building a relationship, and relationships run on regular contact.

Six days out of seven is a good year. Four out of seven is a good start. Nobody is at seven.

This is worth saying plainly. If you have been measuring your faith by the length of your quiet time, you have been measuring the wrong thing, and the number you keep failing has probably been someone else's number all along.

Pick Your Number and Stop Renegotiating

Choose ten and defend it. When the morning is tight, do the five minute version rather than skipping, and let that be enough.

The best length is the one still happening in March. Sit down tomorrow and start the clock.
