Choose Joy Today: Four Verses for the Mornings It Does Not Come Naturally

Choose joy today reads well on a wall. It reads differently at six in the morning after a night you did not sleep, or in a week where the news from the doctor was not what you hoped.

Which is the honest place to start, because joy in Scripture is almost never described as a mood that arrives on its own. It is described as something you turn toward, often deliberately, and often before you feel like it. Four verses make that case better than any encouragement could.

Rejoice Always Is Written as an Instruction

Philippians 4:4 says to rejoice in the Lord always, and then, as if anticipating the objection, says it again. Paul wrote that from prison, which is worth remembering before deciding he did not understand your Tuesday.

An instruction is not a feeling. You cannot be commanded to be cheerful. You can be told where to look, and the verse is specific about where: in the Lord. Not in the circumstances, not in a good outcome, not in the situation resolving. The object of the joy is the part that does not change.

This Is the Day, Including This One

Psalm 118:24 tells us this is the day the Lord has made and calls us to rejoice and be glad in it.

Notice what it does not say. It does not say this is a good day. It does not say a day worth celebrating. It says this is the day He made, the one you are actually in, with everything currently in it. Gladness here is not a verdict on the day's quality. It is a response to who made it.

Some mornings that is the only ground you have to stand on, and it holds.

The Joy of the Lord Is Your Strength

Nehemiah 8:10 says the joy of the Lord is your strength, and the setting matters. The people had just heard the Law read aloud for the first time in a long time, and they were weeping, because they understood how far they had drifted.

Nehemiah did not tell them to cheer up. He told them not to grieve, because the joy of the Lord was their strength, and then he sent them to eat well and share with people who had nothing prepared.

Which is a useful pattern. The joy came first, as a fact about God rather than about them. The strength followed. And the practical instruction was to go feed someone.

And You Are So Loved

All three verses rest on something underneath them. You are loved, already, before the day improves and regardless of whether it does.

That is the difference between choosing joy and forcing a good attitude. Forcing an attitude is work you do on yourself. Choosing joy is remembering something that is true whether or not you can feel it this morning, and letting the remembering be enough to go on.

So choose it today. Not by pretending the week is other than it is, but by putting your weight on the four things above, in whatever order the morning requires.

If you would like a reminder of it somewhere other than a page, our Joy tee carries the word in hand-illustrated floral lettering, made to order on soft Comfort Colors cotton in sizes S through 4XL, $34.98. Something to put on for the mornings you have to choose it on purpose. There is also a version in deeper jewel tones that you might enjoy around the holidays.
