Bible Verses for Anxious Nights and Racing Thoughts
Share
Anxiety at night has a particular character. Everything is larger, nothing can be acted on, and the same three thoughts keep arriving in rotation.
Psalm 121:2 is the one to start with. My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. And Psalm 46:10, be still and know that I am God, is the shortest of them, which at that hour is often the only qualification that matters. These ten verses are short enough to hold at two in the morning, when nothing long is possible.
For Lying Down
1. Psalm 4:8. In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me live in safety.
2. Proverbs 3:24. When you lie down, you will not be afraid. Yes, you will lie down, and your sleep will be sweet.
3. Psalm 3:5. I laid myself down and slept. I awakened, for the LORD sustains me.
For the Thoughts That Will Not Stop
4. Psalm 94:19. In the multitude of my thoughts within me, your comforts delight my soul.
5. Isaiah 26:3. You will keep whoever's mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.
6. Philippians 4:6-7. In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
For the Fear Itself
7. Psalm 56:3. When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.
8. 1 Peter 5:7. Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.
Both are short enough to say on one breath, which matters more than it sounds like it should at three in the morning.
Notice that neither verse claims the fear is unreasonable. The psalmist says when I am afraid, not if, which is a more useful starting point than being told not to worry.
For Remembering Someone Is Awake
9. Psalm 121:3-4. He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
10. Psalm 42:8. The LORD will command his loving kindness in the daytime. In the night his song shall be with me: a prayer to the God of my life.
The image in Psalm 121 is worth sitting with. Someone is awake anyway. Your staying up is not what is holding the night together.
How to Use Them at Two in the Morning
Learn one before you need it. A verse you have to search for on a phone will not help, because the phone will hand you six other things on the way.
Say it slowly, on the out breath, four or five times. Not as a technique but as something true to hold onto while the body settles.
When the thoughts return, and they will, say it again rather than arguing with them.
One Card by the Bed
Write one of these on a card tonight and put it on the bedside table where your hand will find it in the dark.
If anxious nights are frequent rather than occasional, tell your doctor as well. Scripture and good medical care are not competitors, and both are gifts.
Anxious nights usually pass, and they pass faster when they are not compounded by shame about having them. Being awake at three is not a spiritual failure.
