Bible Study Notes on 1 John 4:7-8 | God's Love

It is one thing to be told how to study a passage. It is another to see a study page already filled in, so you know what you are aiming for.

So here is one, worked all the way through, section by section. The passage is 1 John 4:7-8 and the focus is walking in God's love. You could do this same thing with any passage and a blank page.

Scripture

Start by writing the passage out in full. Not a summary of it, not the part you remember. The words themselves, in your own handwriting, before you have an opinion about them.

"Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love." 1 John 4:7-8

Two verses. Read them slowly before you read anything else, including this.

Observation

Before asking what a passage means to you, write down what it actually says. Stay close to the words.

Love comes from God, which makes Him the source rather than one example among many. We are called to love one another, so this is an instruction and not only a description. Those who love have been born of God and know Him, which ties loving to belonging. And those who do not love do not truly know God.

Notice how much of that is simply the verses restated. That is the point. Observation is the step most of us skip, and skipping it is why so many studies end up somewhere the passage never went.

Application

Now the page turns toward your actual Tuesday.

Love intentionally by showing Christ's love in your words and actions, not only in your feelings about people. Build godly relationships by surrounding yourself with those who encourage you toward love rather than away from it.

Examine your heart honestly. Am I walking in God's love right now? Am I reflecting Him well to the people who see me most?

And live as His child, letting your life demonstrate that you know Him. John's argument runs in that direction. What we do with love reveals what we know of God.

Prayer

Turn the passage into a prayer. It does not need to be long.

Lord, thank You for being love. Help me love others the way You have loved me. Teach me to be patient, kind, and selfless. Let my life reflect You in everything I do. Grow my heart to love more deeply and forgive more freely.

Then add whatever the passage stirred up that a written prayer cannot cover. The person who is difficult to love. The place where your patience ran out this week.

Gratitude

Give this its own few lines rather than folding it into the prayer. Naming what you are thankful for on the same page changes the tone of everything above it.

His unconditional love. Family and their support. New mercies every morning. Opportunities to share His love. The gift of His Word.

Reflection

This is where the study becomes yours.

Reading these verses, the thing that surfaces is that love is not just a feeling. It is a choice and an action. He calls us to love others because He first loved us, which means the love we give was never generated by us to begin with.

The more time spent with Him, the more His love flows through to other people. That order matters. We do not manufacture love and then bring it to God. We receive it from Him and pass it along.

Memory Verse

Choose one verse to carry out of the study, and write it somewhere you will pass it again.

Colossians 3:14 pairs beautifully with this passage. Above all these things, put on love, which binds everything together in perfect unity.

Key Takeaways

Close by writing two or three sentences you would want to remember a month from now.

God is love, and He calls me to love others. My love is a reflection of my relationship with Him. Love is how others will know I belong to Him.

Then close the notebook and go love somebody. First John is not a passage that lets you stop at the page.
