A Scripture Memory Checklist for One Verse a Week

One verse a week is fifty two verses a year, which is more scripture than most of us memorize in a decade.

The pace works because it is slow. Here is the week, day by day, with nothing on it that takes more than five minutes. Psalm 51:10 is a good verse to begin on. Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me. Renewing is slow work by nature, which is the whole argument for one verse a week rather than ten.

The Week, Day by Day

1. Sunday. Choose the verse and write it out three times by hand.

2. Monday. Read it aloud ten times, looking at the card each time.

3. Tuesday. Say it aloud with the card covered. Peek when you need to.

4. Wednesday. Write it from memory, then check it and correct in a different color.

5. Thursday. Say it to another person, out loud.

6. Friday. Say it three separate times through the day, morning, noon and evening.

7. Saturday. Write it once from memory and add the card to your review stack.

What You Need

Index cards cut in half, a pen, and somewhere to keep the cards you have finished. That is the entire kit.

Write the reference on both sides. Knowing where a verse lives is half of what makes it useful later.

Choose one translation and stay in it. Switching between wordings is the most common reason a verse never quite locks in, because the brain keeps having to choose between two versions of the same line.

Where to Put the Card

Somewhere your eyes already go. The kitchen window above the sink, the dashboard, the bathroom mirror, the inside of a cabinet door.

The card must be in the path of your ordinary day. A card in a drawer is a card you will find in March, unlearned.

Put a second card somewhere unexpected. The car visor or a coat pocket catches you at a different hour of the day and the two sightings together do more than four in the same room.

Keeping the Old Ones Alive

One new verse a week, plus one old card drawn at random from the stack. Sixty seconds for the review.

Without this step you will have fifty two verses learned and eight remembered. The review is what turns a week of work into something permanent.

When You Miss a Day

Carry on from where the week actually is rather than starting over. A missed Wednesday does not undo Monday.

And if a verse is not sticking by Thursday, keep it for a second week. There is no schedule to fall behind.

It also helps to say it in the wrong places on purpose. In a queue, at a red light, folding laundry. Verses learned only at a desk tend to stay at the desk.

Choose Sunday's Verse Tonight

Pick something short and something you want. Psalm 119:105 or Hebrews 10:23 are both a good first week.

Write it on a card, put it above the sink, and begin.

Fifty two of these in a year is a genuinely different way to live. But you do not have to think about fifty two tonight. You only have to think about one.
