A Christian Evening Examen

By evening, the day can feel like a blur of conversations, responsibilities, small joys, and unfinished thoughts. A Christian evening examen is a simple way to slow down and look back over those hours with God. It is not a performance review, and it is not an invitation to criticize yourself. It is a prayerful practice of noticing, telling the truth, and releasing the day.

You can practice it in a journal, whisper the questions in bed, or sit quietly for a few minutes before turning off the light. The setting matters less than your willingness to become still and honest.

Begin with Presence, Not Analysis

Take a slow breath and let yourself arrive. You do not have to reconstruct every detail of the day. Simply ask God to help you see it clearly and graciously. Picture the day from morning to evening: the places you went, the people you encountered, the moments that carried energy, and the moments that drained it.

Where Did I Notice Grace?

Look for what was life-giving. Grace may have appeared in an answered prayer, but it may also have arrived through a kind text, an unexpected laugh, enough strength for a difficult task, or a few peaceful minutes in the car. Name one or two moments and give thanks. This practice trains your attention toward gifts you might otherwise overlook.

Where Did I Resist Love?

Next, consider where you felt closed, impatient, fearful, or unwilling to love well. The purpose is not to rehearse shame. It is to notice what needs care. Perhaps you hurried through a conversation, held tightly to being right, ignored your own limits, or spoke to yourself without compassion. Name the moment plainly and receive the invitation to begin differently tomorrow.

What Do I Release?

Some parts of the day remain unfinished. There may be work you could not complete, an outcome you cannot control, or a conversation you are still replaying. Imagine placing these things into God's care one by one. Release the need to solve them before sleep. If action is needed tomorrow, write a brief note so your mind does not have to keep holding it tonight.

Close with a Simple Prayer

End with words as simple as, “Thank You for the grace I received. Forgive what was not loving. Hold what I cannot carry into tomorrow.” Then let the prayer be finished. You do not need to force a feeling of peace; you are simply practicing trust.

An evening examen will not make every day tidy. It can, however, help you end the day awake to grace, honest about growth, and less burdened by what belongs in God's hands.
