5 Ways to End Your Day With Gratitude to God

Evening gratitude has one enemy, and it is not unbelief. It is tiredness. By nine o'clock most of us have nothing left for a practice that requires effort.

Philippians 4:4 says to rejoice in the Lord always, and then says it a second time. Again I will say, rejoice. The repetition reads differently at the end of a long day. It is not enthusiasm being demanded, it is a habit being pressed on someone who has already heard it once and let it go. So these five are short. Pick one and use it until it stops working, then pick another.

One: The Three Ordinary Things

Before the light goes off, name three things from that day only. Not your health or your family in general. Three specific things that happened between waking and now.

This is the simplest of the five and the hardest to run out of, because every day supplies new material whether it was a good day or not.

Two: The Last Kindness

Think back through the day and find the last kind thing anyone did for you. It may be small. Someone let you go first. Someone remembered something.

Say thank you for it out loud, to God, and name the person. Kindness received tends to slide past unnoticed, and this catches one before it goes.

Three: The Thing You Did Not Have to Carry

Ask what God handled today that you did not. The conversation that went better than you feared. The problem that solved itself. The thing you dreaded that turned out to be nothing.

Some evenings the honest answer is that today was hard all the way through. Say that instead. Both are prayers.

Four: The Bedside Sentence

Keep a notebook by the bed and write one sentence. Only one.

The limit matters. A page feels like homework at eleven at night and will not survive the week. A sentence survives, and in a year you have three hundred of them, which is a record of your life that nothing else would have produced.

Five: The Spoken Blessing

Say a short thank you out loud over the day and the people in it. Fifteen seconds is enough.

Out loud changes it. A thought stays in your head with everything else you are turning over. A spoken word ends the day rather than continuing it.

Choosing One

Do not attempt all five. Choose the one that fits the version of you that exists at bedtime, not the version you would like to be.

If you miss a night, that is a missed night. There is no debt, no catching up, and no reason it cannot start again tomorrow.
