5 Ways to Celebrate a Small Win With God

Most of us are quick to bring God the disasters and slow to bring him the good weeks. The wins get noted, briefly, and then we move to the next thing.

Psalm 100:4 describes arriving somewhere. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, and bless his name. Thanksgiving is the doorway rather than the reward, which is a good reason to say it out loud before the win has cooled. Marking them matters more than it seems to. Here are five ways to do it that take under ten minutes.

One: Say Thank You Before You Tell Anyone Else

Whatever the win is, say thank you out loud before the text goes out or the news gets shared.

The order changes the meaning. Thanks given first is gratitude. Thanks given after everyone has congratulated you is an afterthought, and you can feel the difference in yourself.

This is harder than it sounds when the phone is already in your hand. Give it ten seconds. Ten seconds is enough to change the order of the whole day.

Two: Write It in the Same Place Every Time

Keep one page, at the back of a notebook or in a jar, and put every answered prayer and small victory on it with the date.

You are building evidence. In eighteen months, on a bad afternoon, that page will be the most persuasive thing in the house.

Date every line. The dates are what make it evidence rather than sentiment, and the gaps between them tell their own story when you read back.

Three: Name What It Cost

Small wins usually took longer than anyone knows. The habit held for six weeks. The conversation you were dreading, finally had.

Say out loud what it cost you, and thank God for the part he carried. Skipping the cost makes the win smaller than it was.

Four: Do Something That Marks It

Buy the good coffee. Light the candle at dinner. Take the long way home.

A marker gives the memory something to attach to. Years later you will remember the walk more clearly than you remember the achievement.

Keep the marker proportionate. A small win marked with a large gesture starts to feel like pressure, and next time you will skip it rather than arrange something.

Five: Tell One Person Who Prayed

If someone prayed with you about it, close the loop. Tell them what happened, plainly.

This is the most neglected step and the most generous one. It hands them your evidence, and they will use it on a day of their own.

If nobody prayed with you, that is worth noticing too. It usually means you carried the thing alone, and the next one would be lighter with one other person in it.

Do It With the Next Small Thing

You do not need a large occasion. The next time something goes right this week, stop for two minutes before moving on.

Say thank you, write the line, and let it count.
